Sustainability is good business with brewing enzymes

Together we can decrease your CO2 emissions, save water and save energy. Of course, you’ll maintain product quality. You’ll also get new, more sustainable business opportunities.

Novozymes takes a scientific approach that pinpoints how and where you can achieve the greatest impact with nature’s enzymes. That way, you can meet both your sustainability goals and your financial ones.

The climate is tough – and getting tougher

Whether “climate” makes you think of the climate crisis or today’s tough business environment, you’ve got a tankful of challenges.

Climate change is putting even more pressure on raw material availability –  and prices. Inflation is driving up the cost of nearly everything in your value chain. Regulators are demanding new sustainability requirements. Meanwhile, retailers and consumers are pushing you to reduce emissions and operate more sustainably.

Enzymes – nature’s tiny but powerful tools – can help you turn many challenges into opportunities.

Sustainability sells

Global concern about climate change is at an all-time high, according to GlobeScan’s 2022 Healthy & Sustainable Living Study of nearly 30,000 people across 31 markets. And even in an inflationary environment, sustainability sells. In fact, a 2022 Capterra study showed that 84% of U.S. consumers would be willing to pay more for sustainable products, despite current inflation levels.

A 2018 survey of U.S. beer drinkers found that 59% would be willing to pay more for beer that has been brewed using more sustainable processes, such as energy efficiency or carbon-saving measures.

Sustainability claims are also increasing in new beer launches – and enabling premiumization. Using enzymes is a way to achieve the kinds of claims consumers are willing to pay more for.

Calculate how much your sustainability can improve

Did you know you can process a variety of raw materials and still brew the same great beer? Perhaps you even want to tap into local materials?

Use our Brewing Sustainability Calculator to see how much your carbon footprint can improve by changing your brewing recipe – and keeping its great taste.

Are you looking at your products’ full life cycle?

Three main areas contribute to the environmental impact of your beer: making the beer itself, which raw materials you use, and packaging.

To make a truly sustainable beer, you must consider the full life cycle of your products. While you don’t have direct control over how farmers raise the crops you use or bottlers produce glass, you do have many opportunities for greater sustainability within your brewery walls. Without sacrificing taste.

You can use innovative enzyme technology to optimize your processes and raw materials. At the same time, you can make changes that elevate your brand and lower your impact on the planet. For example, Ondea® Pro, which enables brewing with 100% barley, can reduce CO2 emissions by 25 kg for every 1,000 liters of beer. And the faster filtration you can get from Ultraflo® Prime saves measurable energy, CO2 and water. There’s a whole portfolio of opportunities awaiting you.

Use the science of life cycle assessment to build new claims

When you work with Novozymes, you’re assured that science drives our innovative technology and documents the sustainability of our solutions. We use ISO standard Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to establish sustainability benefits. These LCA studies cover the entire life cycle of a product from cradle to grave.

See, for example, how we documented that Ondea® Pro can reduce CO2 emissions by 25 kg for every 1,000 liters of beer.

Beer and enzymes are changing the future for African farmers

Meet Janet Karee Matura, a Kenyan farmer who sells her sorghum to breweries. She is one of the people helping the African beer industry become more sustainable.

Why raw material optimization is critical to success – and how to achieve it

In recent years, competition has gotten fiercer. We’ve seen increased variability and volatility in raw materials, growing pressure from tax authorities and regulators, and several breweries challenged on their sustainability efforts. The bottom line: You need to be fast and flexible in today’s brewing market.

Enzymes can help you address the Sustainable Development Goals

As the United Nations explains, the Sustainable Development Goals are “the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.”

Novozymes brewing enzymes can help you contribute to five of the 17 overall goals.

Clean water and sanitation

Careful management of water as a resource is key to a sustainable future. Using enzymes, you can optimize your process to increase your water use efficiency and improve wastewater quality, allowing you to address water scarcity and quality-related challenges in your basins. (See targets 6.3 and 6.4)

SDG 8 icon

Decent work and economic growth

Enzymes enable you to improve resource efficiency in consumption and production. With enzymes, you can decouple economic growth from environmental degradation and contribute to your community’s gross domestic product – especially in least developed countries through local procurement. (See targets 8.1 and 8.4)

SDG 12 icon

Responsible consumption and production

Sustainable consumption and production is about doing more and better with less. It is also about sustainable management and efficient use of resources, local and sustainable procurement, and making sure economic growth does not lead to environmental harm. Enzymes can help you achieve all of the above. (See targets 12.2 and 12.7)

SDG 13 icon

Climate action

Climate change affects everyone everywhere and requires urgent action. By enabling you to save energy, CO2 and water and to use alternative raw materials, enzymes can play a measurable role within your overall palette of sustainability initiatives. (See target 13.2)
