A two-step treatment with H2O2 and BioRas® Balance allows RAS facilities to benefit from H2O2 baths at therapeutic doses without impacting the biofilter. Step1: Close water from the rearing tanks off from the biofilter, apply therapeutic levels of H2O2 to rearing tank/ purge tank water. Step 2: Add a small dose of BioRas® Balance directly into the system. Reopen the system in less than 10 minutes, as all residual H2O2 has been eliminated.

With the easy-to-implement H2O2 and BioRas® Balance combined treatment, there are no H2O2 residuals. With no need to discharge water prior to restocking, you can maintain recirculation rates and water quality during and after protocols. You only need to dose a small amount of BioRas® Balance, so its contribution to your Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) loading is minimal. A liquid product that’s dosed directly into the system, BioRas® Balance works in wide range of temperatures and salinities.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an FDA and EU ECHA-approved biocide for therapeutic use. It’s suitable for use on a wide range of aquaculture species and life cycle steps, and is effective against external parasites, bacteria fungi and other pathogens. That means it can treat a range of topical diseases, allowing for reduced antibiotic usage.

Benefits

H2O2 is a simple compound of water with an extra oxygen molecule that naturally degrades to water and oxygen over time. That’s why it’s considered to be one of the cleanest chemicals. BioRas® Balance is a biodegradable and renewable enzyme. Both H2O2 and the enzyme class to which BioRas® Balance belongs are widely found in nature, including in human immune cells. These produce H2O2 to kill microorganisms and use enzymes to reduce cell damage. BioRas® Balance harnesses the power of this biological mechanism to ensure more robust, sustainable biosecurity in RAS facilities. 

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) targets a wide range of pathogens, making it a powerful tool for disease-control and disinfection in traditional aquaculture. But its use in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is generally limited to surface disinfection or very low application rates for disease control. That’s because it can persist in systems long after use, negatively impacting biofilters’ nitrifying bacteria. BioRas® Balance accelerates the natural breakdown of H2O2, eliminating all residuals in less than 10 minutes. That means you can use higher concentrations of H2O2 for rapid, effective disinfection protocols, with no impact on biofilter stability.

Details

This product contains enzymes. While enzymes are safe to use in consumer applications, they need correct handling in working environments to ensure workers’ safety.

Indeed, repeated inhalation of enzyme dust or aerosols resulting from improper handling may induce sensitization and may cause allergic type 1 reactions in sensitized individuals.

BioRas Balance

BioRas® Balance should be applied to the same area that was treated with hydrogen peroxide.  To maximize hydrogen peroxide degradation by the enzyme, it can be poured directly into the system with good mixing.

Application

Assessment of H2O2 treatment potential in small scale RAS systems with a tank volume of 5m3 (n=3 per treatment).  Final operating temperatures were 13⁰C and 0ppt salinity at time of treatment. After H2O2 was applied to the system initial H2O2 measurement was taken to confirm the starting concentration.  The H2O2 was then allowed to remain present in the system for 70mins at which time a second H2O2 measurement was taken to confirm H2O2 stability.  After the second measurement, BioRas® Balance was added to the system.
